As far as I know most people take visual arts seriously (to some degree). Most people also take some form of writing seriously, whether it be literature or journalism. One might think that if both forms of expression are generally taken somewhat seriously then it should be assumed that a combination of the two should also receive a similar reaction. Since the birth of the comic in 1827 comics have been brushed off as a less than worthy form of entertainment. If you happen to be a high nosed enternainmet snob I recommend "Wilson" by Daniel Clowes you may have a change of heart.
